Project
Problem
Many prospective Umrah pilgrims struggle to fully grasp the intricacies of the rituals, even after attending traditional guidance sessions. This often leads to anxiety and a less fulfilling spiritual journey. There was a clear need for a more interactive and immersive learning method to overcome these comprehension challenges.
Goals
To develop a user-friendly mobile application with Virtual Reality capabilities that provides a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to Umrah rituals, ensuring pilgrims feel confident, prepared, and able to perform their pilgrimage correctly and meaningfully.
User & Audience Target
Future Umrah pilgrims, individuals seeking to deepen their understanding of Umrah rituals, and Islamic educational centers.
Research & Discovery
I conducted research into common misconceptions and difficulties pilgrims face during Umrah, analyzing existing guidance methods and identifying gaps that technology could fill. This involved exploring the potential of Virtual Reality to offer an immersive, risk-free learning environment for complex procedural movements and prayers. The strategy focused on creating an intuitive user experience that combines detailed textual guides with interactive VR simulations to cater to different learning styles.
Project Scope
Development of a mobile VR application featuring a comprehensive Umrah guide, an immersive virtual reality simulation of key pilgrimage sites and rituals, and interactive sections for supplications (Du’a).
Core Solution / App
I developed UmSim, an Android mobile application utilizing Unity and C# to create an immersive Virtual Reality Umrah simulator. This solution provides an interactive and experiential learning platform, allowing users to virtually practice Umrah rituals in a realistic environment before their actual pilgrimage.
Key Features
Role & Contributions
I was solely responsible for the end-to-end development of the UmSim application. My contributions included designing the VR environment, implementing interactive elements using C# within the Unity Game Engine, integrating the Unity XR Package for VR functionality, and ensuring a seamless user experience across the mobile platform. I handled all aspects from conceptualization to coding and testing.
Results / Outcomes
UmSim successfully delivered a unique and highly effective solution for Umrah preparation. The VR simulation significantly improved users’ comprehension and confidence in performing the rituals correctly, providing a safe space for practice. While specific usage metrics from 2019-2020 are not available, the application provided an innovative alternative to traditional guidance, making the complex journey more accessible and less daunting. It positioned the client (UmSim startup) as a pioneer in religious education leveraging cutting-edge technology.
Learnings & Future Steps
This project was a significant learning curve in mobile VR development, particularly in optimizing performance within the Unity ecosystem and understanding user interaction in immersive environments. It also highlighted the potential of technology to address practical challenges in spiritual practices. Future enhancements could include multiplayer VR experiences, personalization features for tracking progress, and integration with travel agencies for a more holistic pilgrim experience.
